Berkeley Shooting New Jersey Calif
Two men were arrested early Sunday morning after reports of gunfire prompted a police response along Grizzly Peak Boulevard near University of California, Berkeley, according to the University of California Police Department.
Authorities said officers received a 911 call shortly before 5 a.m. reporting that two individuals were discharging firearms in the area. Responding officers located the suspects and their vehicle near Signpost 14 along the hillside roadway.
Investigators believe the men were likely firing shots into the air rather than targeting one another or anyone else nearby. No injuries were reported in connection with the gunfire.
A nearby resident said her husband heard several gunshots around 4 a.m., and she later awoke to the sound of police sirens responding to the scene.
The suspects were detained with assistance from the Berkeley Police Department. During the investigation, officers recovered a firearm and discovered suspected methamphetamine and cocaine in the men’s possession.
Police said the men were arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, possession of controlled substances, being armed while in possession of drugs, and other related weapons offenses. Their names had not yet been released while the booking process continued.
Authorities also noted that Berkeley has recorded five non-injury shootings so far this year, which is slightly higher than the number reported at the same time last year. The investigation remains active.
