Southern Michigan Communities Mourn Lives Lost in Tornado Outbreak
SOUTHERN MICHIGAN — Communities across southern Michigan are mourning the deaths of Guthrie, Keri Johnson, and 12-year-old Silas Anderson following a devastating tornado outbreak on Friday, March 6, 2026. The violent storms struck Union City, Edwardsburg, and surrounding areas, causing widespread destruction and leaving families and residents in deep grief.
Guthrie died after her home in Union City was destroyed by the suspected EF-3 tornado, which produced winds of at least 150 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. Emergency responders attempted to save her, but she succumbed to her injuries. Funeral arrangements for Guthrie have not yet been announced.
Keri Johnson, a resident of the Union Lake area near Union City, also lost her life when the tornado destroyed her home, leaving her husband and family devastated.
In Cass County, 12-year-old Silas Anderson from the Edwardsburg area died after being injured when a tornado touched down in Milton Township. First responders arrived as his parents attempted to provide first aid. Silas was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital, but tragically, he later died despite medical efforts. Cass County Sheriff Clint Roach extended condolences to the family and requested privacy for them during this difficult time.
St. Joseph County also experienced severe damage, including torn roofs and debris scattered throughout the Three Rivers area.
In response to the widespread devastation, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced plans to declare a state of emergency for Branch, Cass, and St. Joseph counties to mobilize resources more quickly to assist affected communities.
